Defrag Your Hard DriveHere is a quick tip: defragment your hard drive weekly. As you use your computer, files become fragmented. Fragmentation is the scattering of file parts all over the disk. This occurs as files are deleted or enlarged. It dramatically slows disk speed. Defragging is the process of undoing this damage. Defragging will dramatically speed up a slow computer. Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools and click on the Disk Defragmenter icon. Choose each drive and click the Defraggment button. If you have never done this it can take over an hour the first time! A general rule of thumb is: it should take 10 minutes or less to defragment a drive. If it takes longer than this you are not doing it often enough. Here is a before and after picture of a badly fragmented C: Drive. (Windows XP)
![]() Note: Vista schedules a defragment once a week in the middle of the night! If you don't leave your computer on 24/7 this may be a problem. It no longer shows a picture like the one above.
