Stop SPAM!

No not the tinned meat that wrinkles our noses. The unending stream of emails that come barging into our inbox! Blatantly trumpeting porn, remedies for sexual problems, stock for sale, and more, spam (unsolicited email) is a plague on the Internet. To make matters worse, spam has now spilled over into, cell phones, blogs, Instant Messaging (IM), search engines, news rooms, and more! Spam also carries viruses causing thousands of infections a day. Some authorities claim that 90% of all email is spam! This raises the cost of the Internet, costs consumers millions in repairs and wasted time, and slows down Internet response time for everyone. Spam has truly reached a crisis point with consumers and Internet Provider’s facing major changes. Spammers have become diabolically clever at evading detection. One method is to infect thousands of vulnerable PCs then instruct hundreds of PCs a day to send just a few emails. If each infected PC only sends 200 emails authorities will not become suspicious, besides who do the authorities shut down? Another method is to infect thousands of PCs and have them all begin sending emails as fast as possible. One recent virus infected 20,000 PCs in under 24 hours and then they all started sending spam. Over the next 24 hours the level of spam reached close to 100% of all emails sent. Many experts agree that the only solution is a complete overhaul of the email system. The current system is a passive one that assumes that all email is good. Thus all email servers accept all emails then scan them to determine if they are spam. A better method would involve asking your permission first before accepting any email. It would work like this. If I want to send you an email I must first get your permission. A small packet would arrive telling you who I am, where the email will come from, and other identification information. If I accept the packet and agree to receive the email, then and only then could you send the email. I would be waiting for it and accept it. This would make it very hard to send spam since large amounts of these packets would be traceable and easy to block.

Enough said; what can you do now about preventing spam?

Quick Tip: If you are getting buckets of spam the first thing to do is contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Responsible ISP’s have spam blocking software that can screen out spam before you see it. Many ISP’s do not turn on this feature until you request it. Log onto your account and change your account settings using their Web pages. You may have to try several settings (low, medium, or high) before you are satisfied. If your settings are too high, good emails may be blocked; this is called a false positive.

If your ISP doesn’t provide spam blocking you can buy spam blocking software. This is software that resides on your PC. When an email arrives it is first interrogated by the spam blocker software. If it is a good email you will see it in your Inbox, spam is placed in a junk email box. The spam blocking service constantly updates its definitions of spam. Cloudmark is a unique spam blocking software. They rely on their users to identify spam. Check it out at www.cloudmark.com.

Finally, if you are using a recent version of Microsoft Outlook™ you can turn on the Junk email options. This is the least helpful of all the options because you are doing all the work yourself. You must teach Outlook to identify spam while constantly watching for false positives. If you have any questions please call. Dean Hancy
