Your Computer is full of Holes!

ALL Software has holes in it. Programmers call these holes Bugs! When a bug threatens the security of your computer/data, it is called a vulnerability. Microsoft Windows® (98, ME, 2000, XP, and Vista) and Microsoft Office® (all versions) have a LOT of programs that use the Internet. Many more than you imagine. In a typical computer you may have thirty or more "programs" sending and receiving data over the Internet. Many of these programs have "vulnerabilities," weak places in their computer code that allow a hacker to break into the program and take over your computer!

As Microsoft® updates its products; new vulnerabilities are discovered -- sometimes by security analysts but most often by hackers. These vulnerabilities are not viruses and therefore your antivirus software does NOT protect you from them! When a vulnerability is discovered, Microsoft Updates its software. It does this by publishing an Update. Another word for this is a patch. A patch that fixes a vulnerability is called a Critical Update.

How does it work?
Microsoft® has Web sites that update its products. You MUST regularly (no less than monthly) update all Microsoft software on your computer! This means downloading and installing all Updates. When you visit each Update Web site, the site scans your computer and tells you what updates apply. You choose the updates that you want to download and install. If you have Automatic Updates on you will automatically get Critical Updates, however, you will not receive Optional or other Microsoft Product updates.

Quick Tip: Install all Critical Updates! When Update tells you that Updates have been installed and you must reboot, then reboot! If you are still on dial-up then I recommend turning Windows Update off. You should manually do Windows Update over the Internet once a month. Microsoft publishes new Updates the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Pick a time after that, dial in, connect to Windows Update and start downloading. They can take over an hour!
